John Hawkes is an abolitionist lawyer and brother of Tom Macon.
Biography[]
While attempting to draw attention to the injustices of slavery in front of the Supreme Court, John catches the attention of abolitionist William Still. Still attempts to recruit him to the cause. During a party celebrating the birthday of Tom Macon's daughter Mary, it is revealed that John and Tom are brothers, and Tom asks John to manage his campaign for U.S. Senate. After attending the party and Elizabeth witnessing the cruelty of slavery, they decide to join the cause.
When two escaped slaves came to John and Elizabeth seeking help, they are held captive by the two slaves, and eventually, one of the men accused him of selling his wife and forces Elizabeth to whip John, at which point he tells them about the wife he helped sell into slavery. The man realizes he is lying and tries to kill them, but they are saved by Kyle Risdin. John reveals to Elizabeth that part of his story was true, and they decide to continue their work as abolitionists.
John learns Rosalee is his niece when August attempts to get help for his son who had been stabbed by Rosalee.
John was shot in the head by a bounty hunter after signing papers to announce his bid for a judge's seat.
